MLK Week of Service
“Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God’s children”
– Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.
What is MLK Week of Service?
Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, which is celebrated annually on the third Monday in January, is a national holiday that honors the life and legacy of Dr. King. It is also one of only two federally designated days of service. For more than a quarter century, AmeriCorps has been responsible for bringing people together on this day to serve others and help address community issues.
Funded by a $100,000 grant from AmeriCorps, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville’s MLK Week of Service initiative transforms our traditional Faith Build event to engage hundreds of volunteers from local faith communities over a series of service days during the week of Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. Together, AmeriCorps and Habitat are expanding opportunities for community members to come together in service and make a lasting impact through building homes and strengthening our community.
What can I do for MLK Week of Service?
Volunteer groups can serve from January 16th to January 23rd at our construction sites, the Habitat Store, and doing special service projects at specific alternative sites! At the construction site, volunteers will be helping with tasks such as painting, drywall, door and window installation, and much more. At the Habitat Store, volunteers will help processing donations, move furniture, and assist with beautifying the space!
Ask about hosting a special volunteer service project with your group, or about bringing a volunteer group to serve at different Habitat sites! Don’t know if your congregation has already planned a service project? Reach out to volunteer@cvillehabitat.org or (434) 293-9066 with questions!
Why Participate in MLK Week of Service?
MLK Week of Service is an opportunity to honor Dr. Kingβs legacy by turning his vision of the Beloved Community into action. By coming together in service, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our neighbors and work toward a more equitable community.
Habitatβs mission is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves a place to call home and the opportunity to build a better future. On a service day during MLK Week, volunteers put that belief into practiceβworking alongside future homeowners and fellow community members to build safe, affordable homes and create greater housing stability.
