Carlton's History
The Carlton Mobile Home Park has long been a place of stability and home for over 60 families in Charlottesville. Over the years, the Carlton Mobile Home Park has become a vibrant, tight-knit community. However, in 2024, this community was shaken after hearing the unsettling news that the land under their homes was being sold to an unnamed purchaser. The families at the Carlton Mobile Home Park faced an uncertain future.
This is where Habitat for Humanity stepped in. Within just eight weeks, Habitat for Humanity, in collaboration with the Piedmont Housing Alliance, Legal Aid Justice Center, and the City of Charlottesville, rallied to secure the future of the park. Habitat made a counteroffer to purchase the park, ensuring that the homes of all the families would remain safe and intact.
After weeks of negotiations and careful planning, the Bolton family, who have owned and operated the park for generations, made the crucial decision to sell the land to Habitat. Their decision to sell to Habitat for Humanity was not only a business decision, but a recognition of the unique bond between the land and the families who live there. By choosing to sell to Habitat, they ensured that Carlton would remain a place of affordable housing, protecting its future for generations to come.
