Building & Rebuilding

Building

We partner with hardworking, local, low-income families to help them build and purchase homes. We are committed to building at least 20 homes annually.

Mixed-Income Communities

Since 2004 Habitat has dedicated itself to creating new mixed-income
communities and infusing existing neighborhoods with affordable housing. We
believe in diverse, inclusive, and vibrant communities of neighbors that transcend socioeconomic and cultural divides.

Capacity, Independence and Hope

n order to increase our impact beyond building 20 homes per year, we are reaching farther into local, low-income communities. Because we can only serve 2 out of 10 families who apply to our homebuyer program, we are building capacity to allow us to walk side by side with every aspiring homeowner.

We also believe in the importance of building relationships. Habitat works to create a sense of community, social cohesion, and collective capacity among future homebuyers, empowering them towards goals far beyond homeownership.

Habitat is committed to our families long-term. We work with current homeowners to ensure that every family has the tools to thrive in their homes—as well as make a positive impact on their community and bring hope to others.

Rebuilding

Habitat is exploring new ways to increase affordable housing in existing neighborhoods –starting with improving substandard housing and increasing
homeownership opportunities.

Recapitalization of Communities via Homeownership

This year, Habitat rehabilitated our first home with funding from the federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program and through a partnership with the County of Albemarle. We will build on this pilot project by seeking more opportunities for neighborhood revitalization around the City and County—shoring up neighborhoods before they start to decline.

Home Repair and Renovation

Rebuilding includes rehabbing homes in the County’s urban ring and maintaining existing Habitat neighborhoods. It also means supporting partner organizations’ home repair efforts and renovating houses to make them accessible to families aging in place.
