Women Build Fast Facts |
Women Build of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville, which started in 2001 and has already built 5 houses, is currently constructing its sixth house. |
Our partner families are low-income working families who are working to realize the dream of homeownership. About 1/2 of these families have single mothers as head of households raising children on incomes lower than $30,000 per year. Women Build partner families are required to contribute at least 200 "sweat equity" hours on their home or other partner families' homes. |
The current cost to sponsor a house is $60,000, but the true cost to build a Habitat house is around $205,000 including land, site development and building materials. |
Women Build of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville works to recruit, empower and train women to build simple decent affordable homes. Our mission is to provide a setting in which women are comfortable learning and applying building skills. Women Build is not about excluding men from our projects, but more about including women. Women have the capacity to address the problem of substandard housing and to be part of the solution. |
| Approximately 500 women have volunteered for Women Build over the last six years. |
Many volunteers participate year after year. We have been able to observe the power behind the skills these volunteers have gained on our work sites and their ability to act as leaders to those who are new to Women Build. |
