The Center also features a Community Room, operated by Habitat, which is available to social service agencies and the residents of Southwood for educational and health/wellness trainings. So far this space has hosted classes such as parent/toddler classes by CYFS, trainings for women by Sexual Assault Resource Agency (SARA), Girl Scouts, and GED classes offered by Albemarle County.
With the support of the Albemarle County Police Department a Neighborhood Watch has been formed and meets on a monthly basis. Their goals including creating safe play areas for children, hosting a community wide celebration, and continuing to clean up the mobile home park.
Other projects include a partnership with the Covenant School to design and implement a community garden that will ultimately be maintained and harvested by the residents of Southwood. We are extremely pleased to have partnered with Building Goodness’s Christmas in April to build two new playground areas. The children of Southwood have enjoyed the new Green and Pink Parks immensely.
All of these activities and partnerships represent Habitat’s continued efforts to improve the quality of life for Southwood residents through infrastructure improvements and the ongoing engagement of outside social service agencies to meet the varied needs of the community members. |
