Youth United Lego Blitz Build

Youth United Lego Blitz Build

Celebrated around the world, World Habitat Day calls attention to the need for better shelter. Beginning on Monday, Oct. 1, this year’s theme, Many Homes, One Community, emphasizes the universal need for adequate shelter and the pivotal role of housing in a neighborhood’s progression.

In honor of this day, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville is planning a Lego Blitz Build to engage community youth. A Blitz Build is a Habitat event where volunteers in the community join forces for days of intense building and providing our houses a boost in the construction process. Due to liability, youth under the age of 16 are not allowed to volunteer in Blitz Builds or on the construction site, leading to the creation of the Habitat Lego Blitz Build.

On Friday, October 5th, community youth of all ages will use their creative minds to build Habitat homes from all over the world. The event will occur from 4:30-6:30pm at Charlottesville’s nTelos Wireless Pavilion. Registration is free and includes a bucket of Lego’s as well as a chance at winning a grand prize. In honor of World Habitat Day, builders are encouraged to construct Habitat homes from around the world and are judged based on creativity. Other activities will be available including face painting, balloons, hula hoops and human house creating!

All proceeds from the tournament benefit the Youth United (YU) sixth family sponsorship. YU is a national Habitat program that brings volunteers ages 5-25 together to educate, advocate, and fundraise for affordable housing in our community. Through this program, YU members help fulfill a family's dream of home ownership. The YU Chapter raised $10,000 last school year as a part sponsor for the Martin family, and is hoping to become a full-house sponsor - $60,000 - for their sixth-sponsored family in the 2012-2013 school year.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville realizes that youth are vital to the future of building. We are committed to incorporating youth by educating them on the benefits of homeownership, cultivating leaders in our Youth United program, and building for families who’s children are the future of the community. Participation in the Habitat Lego Blitz Build is a great way to continue the outreach of the YU program and the mission of Habitat.
